Training awards recognize unit Scouters for tenure, training, and performance in their leadership roles. Award knots are worn on the left side of the uniform, above the left pocket, in rows of three (maximum 15 knots).


Tenure: One year as a registered Cub Scout Den Leader

Training Required:

  • Fast Start training for Den Leaders
  • Basic Training for Cub Scout Den Leaders
  • Youth Protection Training
  • Participate in Pow Wow, University of Scouting, or attend minimum 4 roundtables

Performance (5 of the following):

  • 50% advancement to Wolf or Bear rank
  • Re-register 75% of eligible members during rechartering
  • Graduate 60% of members into Webelos Scouting
  • Have assistant den leader or second adult present regularly
  • Have den chief attending meetings regularly
  • Lead a den service project
  • Conduct minimum 3 meetings monthly for 9 months

Scouter’s Training Award (Cub Scout Leaders)

Tenure: Two years as a registered Cub Scout leader

Training Required:

  • Complete position-specific training
  • Youth Protection Training

Performance (5 of the following):

  • Achieve rank advancement goals for your den
  • Participate in pack committee meetings
  • Attend district/council training events
  • Complete a community service project
  • Complete supplemental leadership training

Tenure: Two years as a registered Cubmaster

Training Required:

  • Cubmaster position-specific training
  • Youth Protection Training
  • BALOO (recommended)

Performance: Pack achieves stated program goals including advancement, membership retention, community service, and participation in district events.


Scoutmaster Key / Assistant Scoutmaster Key

Similar structure to Cubmaster Key — tenure + training + performance requirements for troop leadership.


Award knots (also called “square knots”) are worn:

  • Centered above the left pocket
  • Bottom edge touching the top of the pocket flap
  • In rows of three
  • Maximum 15 knots simultaneously recommended

The knot for each training award is unique — order through scoutshop.org.


The Advancement Chair tracks leader award progress for each registered adult. Progress tracking spreadsheets should record:

  • Award name
  • Tenure start date
  • Training completion dates
  • Performance criteria met (with dates)
  • Submission date to district

Progress tracking templates are maintained in the pack’s internal records.
