Role Summary

The Junior Assistant Scoutmaster (JASM) is a unique leadership position for Scouts ages 16 and 17. The JASM serves as a bridge between the youth leaders and the adult leadership team, functioning in a supervisory role similar to an Assistant Scoutmaster while remaining a youth member. The JASM is not a member of the Patrol Leaders’ Council but may attend PLC meetings by invitation.


Requirements

  • Age: Must be 16 or 17 years old
  • Selection: Appointed by the Scoutmaster
  • Training: Should complete Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops (ILST)
  • Note: This is a youth position, not an adult leader position. The JASM is NOT a voting member of the Patrol Leaders’ Council.

Core Responsibilities

  • Serve as a link between youth leaders and adult leaders
  • Assist the Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmasters as requested
  • Help with troop program delivery and mentoring of younger Scouts
  • Provide leadership at troop meetings and outdoor activities
  • Model good leadership and Scout Spirit for younger Scouts
  • May be assigned to work with a specific patrol or new-Scout group
  • Help ensure that the patrol method and youth-led troop concept are working effectively
