Role Summary

The Instructor is an experienced Scout who teaches Scouting skills to other members of the troop. This position is ideal for Scouts who are proficient in outdoor skills, first aid, or other Scouting disciplines and enjoy sharing their knowledge. A troop may have more than one Instructor, each specializing in different skill areas.


Requirements

  • Selection: Appointed by the Senior Patrol Leader with Scoutmaster approval
  • Proficiency: Must be competent in the skills they will teach
  • Training: Should complete Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops (ILST)

Core Responsibilities

  • Teach Scouting skills to troop members as needed
  • Prepare lesson plans and gather materials for skill instruction
  • Help Scouts meet rank requirements by teaching required skills
  • Assist patrol leaders in teaching skills within their patrols
  • Set up and run skills instruction at troop meetings and campouts
  • Stay current in personal Scouting skills and knowledge
  • Coordinate with the Senior Patrol Leader and Scoutmaster on the troop’s training needs
