Den Leader Guide: Wolves (2nd Grade)

Overview

Wolves is the Cub Scouting program for second graders. At this rank, the required adult partner at every meeting is no longer required (though parental involvement is still encouraged). The den uses a den leader, assistant den leader, and den chief model. Meetings are typically held twice a month.

Meeting Structure

  1. Before the Meeting — Den leader, assistant, and den chief make final preparations
  2. Gathering — Scouts arrive and join a game or activity; den leader takes attendance and checks requirement completion
  3. Opening — Simple opening ceremony including Scout Oath, Scout Law, and Pledge of Allegiance
  4. Activities — Scouts complete activities related to the current adventure requirements
  5. Closing — Den leader gives reminders and closing thought; brief inspirational closing; denner leads Scouts to restore the room
  6. After the Meeting — Den leader, assistant, and den chief plan next meeting

Den Chief

For Wolf dens and above, a den chief can be a great asset. Ask your Cubmaster to request a den chief from a local Scouts BSA troop. Give your den chief meaningful responsibilities right away.

Tips for New Wolf Den Leaders

  • Establish a den code of conduct at your first meeting — this is actually a Bobcat Adventure requirement
  • Second graders are more independent than Tigers; they can handle more responsibility
  • Request a den chief early — having an older Scout role model makes a real difference
  • Twice-monthly meetings are the norm at this level; set a consistent schedule
